When is the Via Ferrata open?
The Via Ferrata is open 24/7 on 365 days a year. You may want to climb it in dry conditions though as it becomes slippery in rain.
Who can climb the Via Ferrata?
The Via Ferrata was designed to be suitable for the everyday person - with families in mind. You don't need to have previous climbing experience. Anyone with a moderate fitness and a sense for adventure may attempt to climb it. Kids from the age of 12 seem to have great fun up there - though younger kids may still go if accompanied. We recommend a skilled caregiver to additionally belay any kids younger than 10. Reach is likely to be an issue for younger children.
Is there a minimum age, size or weight?
There are no official restrictions. It appears that kids below 140 cm in size are having problems with reach, so this is the recommended minimum. The hire gear that can be obtained from Ngarua Caves is designed for a minimum weight of 40 kg. Below that weight the shock-absorber device may not deploy correctly in the unlikely event of a fall which may lead to injury. We recommend a skilled caregiver to additionally belay any kids younger than 10.
Is there a maximum age, size or weight?
There are no official restrictions. We know of people 80+ years of age having a great time climbing the Via Ferrata - but obviously this depends a lot on the physical shape.
Being tall is an advantage so no limits here. Also no weight limits apply as the structure you will be using is designed to hold several tons.
I have rock climbing gear. Can I climb the Via Ferrata with two slings and two carabiners?
We have seen many rock climbers do this but we strongly discourage this practice! To safely climb a Via Ferrata your gear setup has to include a shock-absorber between you and the carabiners. If you take a fall without a shock-absorber on a vertical climb the forces of abrupt stopping may be strong enough to break bones and cause serious injury or even death. Don't be shy to hire safe gear from the nearby Ngarua Caves shop. It's not expensive and even free for under 18s.
Can I climb the Via Ferrata in bad weather?
It is advised to avoid climbing it in wet conditions as it may become slippery and the risk of injury may be increased.
