Come up the Hill and climb with us!
We are proud to be opening up the newly built Via Ferrata climbing park on Takaka Hill to the public! This not-for-profit community project was over 3 years in the making and has been finished just in time for this summer season.
When: Come up on Saturday 7th of December from 10 am to 6 pm and give it a try!
Where: Search for "Via Ferrata Takaka Hill" on Google Maps or navigate to "1642 Takaka Hill Highway, Takaka Hill 7198" to get to the carpark.
Who: The Via Ferrata was designed to be suitable for the everyday person - with families in mind. You don't need to have previous climbing experience. Anyone with a moderate fitness and a sense for adventure may attempt to climb it. Kids from the age of 12 seem to have great fun up there - though younger kids may still go if accompanied. We recommend a skilled caregiver to additionally belay any kids younger than 10. Reach is likely to be an issue for younger children.
Free access: The use of the Via Ferrata is free for everyone at all times! If you don't have the required climbing gear (like most people), no problem: On the opening day free hire gear will be available at the entrances to the two climbing routes. After the opening day the gear can be hired from nearby Ngarua Caves for a small fee.
For those that prefer not to try climbing by themselves: Every hour on the hour a guide will be available at the entrance to the "Cliff Traverse" route to assist you.
The Ngarua Caves coffee cart will be on the carpark on the opening day.
